Maintaining a kidney friendly diet is an important part of slowing kidney disease. Here are two common problems: high blood pressure and diabetes – both major risk factors.
Quite simply, eating kidney friendly foods and maintaining a balance of fluids in your body will help to keep your weight under control. This may also keep your blood pressure where it should be. Eating three balanced meals a day will also regulate your blood sugar. You may also need a snack at night. This is especially important if you have diabetes.
Kidney/Diabetic Friendly Eating Tips
- A good rule of thumb is to consume foods that are low in salt, fat and sugar.
- Read the “Nutrition Facts” label on food/beverage items. Check the sodium, sugar and total fat amounts.
- Avoid canned items, as these often have a high sodium content – greater than 140 mg per serving.
- When cooking with oils, choose olive or canola oil.
- Eat baked or fresh, rather than fried foods.
- When eating meat, choose lean cuts, chicken or fish.
- Eat appropriate serving sizes, not double or large portions.
- Talk to your primary care physician, Indiana Kidney Specialist Physician or registered dietitian about what you should be eating each day to be as healthy as you can.
